HTML
serves as the basic coding technology to publish content on the
Internet. HTML is designed to display data. Another web
technology XML is designed to describe data as ‘well formed’
documents. In contrast with XML, HTML is loose and forgiving
language living scope for ill-formed HTML documents on the Internet.
Combination of HTML and XML, and their strengths have introduced
a new markup language for the next generation - XHTML.
Today
internet access is not limited for desktops. There exist various
browser technologies to carry out internet access on Portable
devices such as palm computers, mobile phones and other
handhelds. Portable devices requires only small subsets of the
bloated HTML code which is used for desktop browsers as well as
these devices do not have power to interpret “bad” markup
language.
XHTML documents are XML conforming means they
are readily viewed, edited, and validated with standard XML tools
that’s why it is usable by any type of client: Palm computers,
mobile phones or handhelds.
XHTML syntax and coding rules
are very straightforward and easy to implement. The real purpose of
these rules is to allow a seamless integration of XHTML with XML and
other related "X" technologies- XML, XPATH, XSL and XSLT.
